The routine that works best is simple: test two or three times a week, adjust pool pH first (between 7.2 and 7.6) and only then correct the chlorine. Doing it the other way round is one of the most common pool maintenance mistakes, because high pH strips chlorine of much of its disinfecting power and you end up using more product than you need.
